Compress Images for Instagram

Use a canvas that matches the placement

For a square feed post, prepare 1080 × 1080 pixels (1:1). For a portrait feed post, 1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) uses more vertical screen space without relying on an automatic crop. For Stories and Reels, use 1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16). These are working export dimensions, not a reason to enlarge a small original. Choose the placement before compression: trying to use one landscape file for feed, Story, and Reel usually leaves the subject too small or forces an awkward crop.

Expect Instagram to make another encode

Instagram processes uploads for delivery, so exporting a clean source gives it less damage to introduce. Start from the original, crop at the final aspect ratio, and export a fresh JPEG for photographs. Avoid saving the same JPEG again and again, because artifacts accumulate before Instagram handles the file. Keep headlines, price labels, and faces away from the top and bottom of 9:16 creative; the interface can cover edge content in Stories and Reels. Meta’s Reels guidance also recommends keeping key creative in the safe zone for 9:16 placements.

Check the image where people will see it

Inspect the compressed image on a phone before uploading. Look closely at skin tone, product edges, gradients, and small type, then upload a test post or Story if the campaign matters. A smaller file is useful only when it remains legible at feed size. Save separate versions for storefronts and social posts rather than reusing an Instagram crop on a product page.
